Acupuncture Therapy

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient healing technique that involves inserting thin, sterile needles into specific points on the body to promote natural healing, pain relief, and overall well-being. This traditional therapy is based on the concept of balancing the body’s energy flow, known as Qi (pronounced "chee"), along meridian pathways.

Acupuncture is safe, effective, and drug-free, making it a powerful alternative or complementary treatment for various health conditions.

History of Acupuncture

Acupuncture has been practiced for over 5,000 years, originating in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It was historically used by Chinese physicians to treat illnesses by restoring the balance of energy in the body. Over time, acupuncture spread to different cultures and is now recognized worldwide as an effective form of natural therapy.

In modern times, scientific studies have confirmed its pain-relieving, stress-reducing, and immune-boosting benefits. The World Health Organization (WHO) and leading medical institutions recommend acupuncture for a wide range of conditions.

The lung channel originates at the zhongfu (Middle Palace) point and terminates at the shaoshang (Lesser Shang) points. There are approximately 22 acupoints on this channel, including zhongfu (Middle Palace), yunmen (Cloud Portal), tianfu (Palace of Heaven), xiabai (Clasping the White), chize (Foot Marsh), kongzui (Utmost Opening), lieque (Break in the Sequence), jingqu (Channel Ditch), taiyuan (Great Abyss), yuji (Fish Border) and shaoshang (Lesser Shang).

These points are mainly used in the treatment of pulmonary complaints such as coughs and asthma, soreness and inflammation of the throat, cold pain in the shoulders and back and pain in the inner and frontal parts of the hand and arm.

The Rules for Acupuncture

Rules for Acupuncture

Woodcut from Tong ren shu xue zhen jiu tu jing (Illustrated Manual of Acupoints on the Bronze Man) by Wang Weiyi, published in 1443 (8th year of the Zhengtong reign period of the Ming Dynasty), illustrating the rules for acupuncture prohibition.

These rules are attested in the early medical classics Huangdi Neijing and Zhenjiu jia yi. They are graphically represented here in a diagram composed of four concentric circles.

The prohibitions are established by an complex combinatory system, structured according to the phases of the moon, in which zi and wu (1st and 7th Earthly Branches) form the 'warp'and mao and you (4th and 10th Earthly Branches) the 'weft'.

A certain flexibility was allowed in applying these rules, and it was not expected that they should be strictly adhered to in life-or-death situations.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture works by stimulating specific points (acupoints) on the body, which:
✔ Improves blood circulation
✔ Releases endorphins (natural painkillers)
✔ Reduces inflammation & tension
✔ Restores energy balance (Qi)
✔ Strengthens the nervous & immune systems

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

No, acupuncture is virtually painless! The needles are very fine, much thinner than injection needles. Most people experience a slight tingling or warmth at the acupuncture points, followed by deep relaxation.
